the tundra had always been one of the shepherd's favorite places to go. she loved the sand against her paws here, but strangely enough, she had never been one for the beaches. but, she did like to be on her own, and not many of the other canines or species would hide here. sure, she would see some lizards and snakes, maybe a sand frog here or there, but nothing that spoke to her or killed her silence. and the young dog liked it that way. her head was tilted up toward the sky, her haunches leaned back into the smooth dirt and her ears high and alert. suddenly, something zoomed under her paws and shimmied through the dirt. she couldn't see it, but knew it was one of the common lizards.

a sudden jolt of energy sent the shepherd flying to her paws, scouting her eyes to follow the lizard. as she ran, her paws flung the soft dirt and dried grass all over, but she paid no mind to it. one could say that her entire being was locked on target. she finally got close enough to slap her paws on the creature, but only paused long enough to mark the catch and then release it, allowing the chase to continue. lizards weren't her favorite meal, if they could be considered one at all. they were stringy and tiny, not worth the effort of a catch. but, the female liked the chase. it was what her breed was bred to do. she was sure they didn't necessarily have lizards in mind, but the point had gotten across.

she played the came of catch and release until the dusk was about them and she finally allowed herself to slide to a stop. her tongue lolled out of her mouth as she panted lightly, though she knew all too well that there was little water in this area, and the stuff that was, was nothing more than mud. pushing her thirst away, the shepherd flopped down in a sandy spot, watching as the sun started to fade behind the darkening sky.

the barrens.

he knew he Should not be here at all. there were few animals, little prey, he could spy mountains in the distance, yet all he found around him was flat and empty. there were patches of grass here and there, and he could see a pond or two far off in the distance. it was also cold, and there would probably be some snowfall later on if he wasn't careful. but, overall, he did not like the place one bit. just looking at this barren place makes me hungry. as if on cue, his stomach grumbled at him.

pushing onward, the mix found his paws growing sore and tired. he wouldn't be able to make it too far before night fall, that was for certain. he would need to find a place to rest, possibly hunt what little prey there was--if he could even eat snakes and frogs, that is--and try not to get himself killed. yet, he was able to spot something larger than a toad off in the distance. it looked like a... dog. another dog was out here? well, he was, so why couldn't others? sitting down, he tilted his head to the side as he watched the other dog as they seemed to be playing with their meal.

he could not tell how much time passed before the other dog stopped what they were doing, yet the sky told him it was getting late. find shelter. the voice in his head told him. but dog, said another voice, possibly the one that kept him rooted to the ground for so long. with a soft sigh, he stood up and trotted over to where the stranger laid. he kept his distance, not wanting to get too close to a stranger, and laid down as well, but he pulled himself forwards with his front paws so that his hind legs splayed out behind him with his tail wagging between them.

the shepherd was the kind of dog that liked to hang around by herself these days. ever since she lost her human family, she wasn't one to try and tie bonds with others, she found it was much more peaceful and painful on her part if she just stayed alone. of course, that left this empty pit in her stomach, a hole in her heart, but she forced it away by exhausting herself during the day and sleeping at night. it kinda sucked when she thought about being so young and knowing that she had such a long time ahead of her unless something tragic happened. something would need to change soon, or she would be bored to death before the reaper found her. lost in her thoughts, she didn't catch the scent of another dog lurking nearby. then again, there wasn't any wind to give her that signal, either.

the only thing that got her to look was the nagging feeling that someone was staring. for a moment, she didn't turn her head, instead, she let out a low growl. her teeth were bared, but her eyes stared at the start of the sunset, not at the creature to her side. but, finally, she turned. with her ears arched and teeth still bared, she turned to see a black, white, and brown dog looking at her with a wagging tail. the shepherd was so shocked in the company of another dog that she pretty much stopped - tongue lolled awkwardly - and one ear falling in her own confusion. the only other dogs she had seen in a while were the two males she had met at the docks. but, she had never expected to see another dog out here, where it was hot and nothing else seemed to live. it was her own place. and she wasn't sure how she felt about another dog being out here.

still, it was too good an offer to pass up, and this canine didn't seem too dangerous. though, his red-eyed gaze did make the shepherd a little uncomfortable. her tail gave a small wag and she gave a light, yet friendly whine. "hello." she murmured, her eyes not daring to meet the other dogs. she stayed in her laying down position, muzzle rested slightly on her front paws, but now her eyes, ears, and muscles were much more alert.

hello.

one word. a greeting. that was all he received from the female. it was enough for him as his tail began to wag faster, taking the greeting as a cue for him to, well, be social. a soft whine left him as he shifted around, resting his muzzle on his paws, slightly mirroring the shepherd. however, his posture was much more relaxed and loose, wiggling and moving along with his long tail. red eyes remained on the stranger, unaware that staring was rather rude and should probably be avoided unless the situation calls for it. "hello!" he echoed, though his voice did not remain concealed or muffled. he was quick to let out a yip, perking his ears and his nose lifting with the sound.

he shifted once more, rocking to put a majority of his weight on his left side. he lifted his head and parted his jaws, letting his tongue loll out while carefully making sure that the sensitive muscle did not end up cut or stabbed by his unnaturally sharp, saw-like teeth. "so, why're'ya in a place like this? it's kinda... empty." he should be one to talk. oh, wait, he was. oho. he really was bad at starting conversations, but he was not comfortable with prolonged silence. such silence would become awkward and unwanted.

ooc: i wanted to get you a post before moving day. xP i swear posts will be less awkward later on. still trying to grasp this dork's personality.
